Gish

Dr. Robert G. Gish, M.D., is a founding and active member of the Board of Directors for the VVHA. He is also the founder and principal consultant of Robert G. Gish Consultants, LLC in San Diego, CA. His area of specialty include: Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Transplant Medicine. Dr. Gish also has expertise in: Hepatitis B, C, D and E Detection; Epidemiology and Clinical Presentation of liver disease and viral hepatitis; HBV treatment; Bioartificial livers; Liver Cancer; Drug development; Public policy on liver disease; HCV drug development; Policies on Global, liver disease.

Dr. Gish has made key contributions to hepatitis research and treatment; he was a major early contributor to the decipherment of methods for the detection of hepatitis B and C virus and characterizing its epidemiology and clinical presentation in humans. He was involved in studies that led to the genotypic classification strategies and methods now in use worldwide.

Dr. Gish majored in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kansas and earned his M.D. from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City, in 1980. Dr. Gish did his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California in San Diego, CA from 1980 to 1983.  Following that, he worked on a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of California in Los Angeles, CA from 1984 to 1988.

Dr. Gish works in Phoenix, Arizona at St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center to help start a liver transplant program at that facility and to help expand their Liver Disease Center to enhance research and education.
